Step One

Begin by cutting two colored papers with different colors. One longer in width (liner) than the other (lantern). You can use any color that you want for your paper lantern. For this tutorial, we use yellow paper for the liner (6x11in) and red paper for the lantern (4x11in).

Tip: Red and yellow are perfect combination for Chinese culture. The color red symbolizes happiness and good fortune, while the color yellow symbolizes power, royalty, and prosperity.

Step Two

Set aside the liner paper. Get the lantern paper and fold a portion of the top and bottom part towards you.

Step Three

Using a craft knife, a ruler, and a cutting mat (optional), make multiple cuts in the center of the lantern paper.

NOTE: Adult must be present when doing this step or must be the one to use the sharp object to avoid any accidents.

Step Four

Now glue the two folded parts of the lantern paper on top of the liner paper as seen on the photo. Make sure the center strips are bulging out in a curve shape.

Step Five

Cut the end strip of the lantern paper. Then apply glue on the edge of the paper.

Step Six

Attach both edges together to create a tube-like shape.

Step Seven

Cut a small strip of paper and glue it on top to make a handle.

Step Eight

Cut the bottom of the tube into fringes.

Step Nine

Make multiple paper lanterns and use a yarn or any string to display them!

And you’re done!

We hope this easy Lunar New Year paper lantern craft tutorial will be a fun activity to do with your kids in preparation for the Lunar New Year and the year of the Tiger.
